Local MS, Peter Fox, wrote to the Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales in October to ask for an update on the ongoing works on the M48 and A40 in his constituency.
In his response to Peter, the Cabinet Secretary confirmed the reduced limit on both roads was implemented due to the deteriorated condition of the road restraint system. The Cabinet Secretary stated the design for the replacement barriers is included in the current financial year.
In the correspondence to the Welsh Government, Peter asked if the current Traffic Regulation Orders would need to be renewed following their expiration in early 2025. The Cabinet Secretary has confirmed they will be renewed.
Peter will monitor the situation over the coming months and will look to take this up again with Welsh Government in the new financial year.
Peter Fox, Member of the Senedd for Monmouth, has said:
“No one can be in any doubt that the works being undertaken on both the M48 and A40 are necessary to ensure the safety for all road users.”
“I have received correspondence frequently from my constituents, quite rightly asking for a time frame on the works being completed.”
“I am pleased to see the design for the replacement barriers at both locations remains in place for this financial year, but the extending of the traffic orders suggests to me a protracted timeline for the works beginning and being completed.”
“I will continue to monitor this situation closely over the next few months and will keep my constituents informed.”
