Local MS, Peter Fox, has co-sponsored a debate in the chamber calling on the Welsh Government to implement a holistic approach to our food system here in Wales.
Statistics from the charity Nesta say that 34% of adults in Wales are classed as obese.
This makes Wales the nation with the highest obesity rates in the UK, far higher than England with 26%, Scotland with 29% and Northern Ireland with 27%.
A staggering one in three children in Wales are overweight or obese by the time they start primary school.
Commenting Peter Fox MS said:
“We are incredibly blessed in Wales to have an agricultural sector that produces an abundance of high-quality fresh food.
“However, despite this, the dominance of processed and ultra-processed food in our diets has crept up on us and we are now seeing the profound impact on the health and wellbeing of the people of Wales.
“If the Welsh Government really wants to improve the health of our children and that of future generations, we must see a change in approach now and get more local food into schools, hospitals and care homes.”
