A LOCAL politician has showered with praise a truffle businessman for supplying his produce across the whole of the UK.
Recently Peter Fox, the Member of the Senedd for Monmouth, visited the Usk-based Welsh Truffle Company to hear more about the company’s rapid rise.
The company was launched just over 10 years ago, yet in no time at all is now supplying truffles (a fungus) to restaurants and other sites across the country.
Commenting on the visit Mr Fox said:
“It was an absolute delight to meet owner Matt Sims to hear more about the truffle trade which, in the next decade, is expected to be worth more than £3 billion.
“Matt started the business in 2008, after planting just short of 5,000 trees, but the end results are now bearing remarkable fruit.
“This is an outstanding Monmouthshire business and I’m certain it will continue to grow from strength to strength.”
And owner Matt Sims added:
“I thoroughly enjoyed meeting Peter today, who took such a keen interest in the truffle trade.
“I told Peter that, originally, I worked in the metal industry but later decided to enter the truffle trade because I wanted a change from what I was doing. It was a risk to get involved with truffles but the gamble has certainly paid off.
“It’s a lot of hard work, but I’m passionate for what I do.”
