Following a visit to the closed Inglis Bridge in Monmouth last month, Peter Fox, MS for Monmouth, wrote to the Ministry of Defence to highlight the impact the closure of the bridge is having on Monmouth residents, and to seek clarity and reassurance on the future of the bridge.
In a response to Peter’s letter, received from the Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry, they advised ‘the technical design stage is complete and statutory approvals have been obtained for the proposed works’.
The Minister stated that ‘funding for the project will be considered alongside other Defence priorities and works will be instructed once funding has been allocated and will proceed as soon as is practically possible’.
Peter Fox has welcomed the proposed refurbishment by the MoD and is sure this will be embraced by Monmouth residents but would like to see a firmer commitment on the timeframes faced by constituents.
In his reply to the Minister, Peter Fox has asked for details on what timeframe the MoD has for funding being allocated to the project and works being initiated.
Peter Fox, Member of the Senedd for Monmouth, has said:
“I have been contacted by several constituents in recent weeks about the closure of the Inglis Bridge in Monmouth, many of whom are keen to see it returned into service as soon as possible.”
“I am pleased to read of the proposed works by the Ministry of Defence, and it is reassuring to me they will proceed as soon as is practicable.”
“This bridge is used by residents all over the town, and the closure has reduced access for walkers, school children and others who use the nearby fields. I know residents are very anxious for the bridge to be re-opened.”
