The Member of the Senedd for Monmouth, Peter Fox MS, has urged the Welsh Government to waste no further time in scrapping the damaging all-Wales Nitrate Vulnerable Zones.
Mr Fox, who is a farmer, raised his serious concerns during this week’s Welsh Conservative debate on the matter in the Senedd.
Speaking during the debate, Mr Fox said:
“Farming unions and thousands of farmers, in Monmouthshire and across Wales, have warned that the acclaimed benefits to water quality from the NVZ will be relatively insignificant, and certainly dwarfed by the negative economic impacts that will result.
“Each day we are hearing of farming businesses considering calling it a day due to the additional burden of heavy-handed regulations to be imposed from the NVZ.
“Now is a time where the Welsh Government should, as a priority, be looking to ensure food security, rather than hit farming businesses with this big metaphorical stick. We mustn’t forget farmers are the custodians of our wonderful countryside and they make Wales what it is. The government should work with them, not against them.”
