AN SOS appeal for more help and support to tackle Motor Neurone Disease (MND) has been made.
This week marks Global Motor Neurone Disease Awareness Day which aims to highlight the incurable disease around the world.
And to mark the day, the Motor Neurone Disease Association has called on the Welsh Government to improve the quality of life of those with MND in Wales, by:
- making investment in MND research in Wales;
- improving care and services;
- recruiting an all-Wales lead consultant neurologist for MND with a care and research remit;
- providing safe and accessible homes to allow those with MND to live safely, independently and, most importantly, with dignity.
Sian Guest, who works for the Motor Neurone Disease Association, said:
“It is clear to us that we need to do more in Wales to ensure the lives of those with MND are not made more difficult. I know the difference good services can make to the lives of people living with MND.
“The rapid progression of MND is particularly cruel and this why what we are calling for needs to be answered swiftly.
“We urge the Welsh Government to heed our desperate calls to improve the lives of those with MND.”
And Peter Fox, the Member of the Senedd for Monmouth and a Motor Neurone Disease Champion, added:
“Global Motor Neurone Disease Awareness Day is incredibly important because there is so much that needs to be done to improve the quality of life of those living with this dreadful disease.
“MND can be truly devastating for both those living with it and their families. It is clear to me that we need to do more to ensure their lives are not made more difficult.
“MND sufferers do not have time to waste, and desperately need more support NOW.”
